Andy van der Meyde sends blunt Jarrad Branthwaite transfer message after PSV loan from Everton

Andy van der Meyde has criticised Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and advised the PSV loanee to aim for a return to English football when the market reopens.

Branthwaite has earned promising reviews for his performances in the Netherlands and totted-up 36 matches for PSV in all competition for this season During that time, the centre-back has also contributed four goals and two assists while helping his defensive team0mates keep 12 clean sheets.

However, despite the Eredivisie giants making no secret about their plans to target thw 20-year-old permanently, that proposed move has hit a major stumbling block with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy - a champion for him - stepping down with immediate effect.

As things stand, there is no option or obligation for PSV to purchase Branthwaite and with van Nistelrooy gone he faces an uncertain immediate future.

But according to van der Meyde - who played just 24 games in his four years with Everton - the defender is not the long-term answer for PSV in any case.

As quoted by Veronica Offside and relayed by Voetbal Zone, the former Netherlands international said: "If you look at PSV's team, if you want to compete for the prizes you need a different defence.

"Branthwaite suddenly starts playing as a left-winger at one point. He can play into [Patrick] van Aanholt like that, but he loses the ball and you get a corner from which a goal falls.

"You have to get rid of him very quickly. I don't understand anything about that [a permanent transfer]."

Van der Meyde, 43, added: "That boy should go and enjoy playing football in England, and heading balls away, not crossing the halfway line and not interfering in the game. That just won't do."
