Andy Robertson has opened up on the mood inside the Liverpool dressing room after the Reds were defeated in the Champions League final by Real Madrid.
Vinicius Junior scored the only goal of the game, two minutes before half-time, to seal the Spanish giant’s 14 th Champions League title and ensure that an incredible season for the Reds ended with disappointment. It came less than a week after Jurgen Klopp’s side narrowly missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
The Reds lifted both the EFL Cup and FA Cup trophies this campaign, with both victories coming via penalty shootouts after scoreless draws against Chelsea. However, despite winning two trophies – there will naturally be a great deal of disappointment of missing out on further silverware.
A downbeat Robertson said of the mood inside the dressing room after the match: "The dressing room is quiet, devastated. That is what happens when you don't win finals.”
Liverpool had a total of 23 shots during the match, of which nine were on target, six were off target and six were blocked. By contrast, the Spanish side had only one shot on target and just three efforts on goal in total.
Speaking on the Reds missing their chances, Robertson highlighted the performance of Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois. The former Chelsea goalkeeper was arguably the star player of the match by making a string of fine saves, including multiple Mohamed Salah efforts and a Sadio Mane effort which he tipped onto the post in the first half.

Robertson continued: "We had chances, came up against an unbelievable keeper. Being honest though, we could have played better. In the second half we didn't start great and they got hold of the game. When you come up against experienced teams like that they know how to win finals.”
Speaking on what went wrong for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the Scottish defender added: "We are a pressing team, it has worked so much for us but we have been caught back post and that's football. It is hard to get back in the game playing against a very experienced team, they know how to see out a game."
Liverpool were unable to land their seventh Champions League title – a trophy that would have equalled Italian club Milan’s record in the competition. It also means they are now eight successes behind record holders Real Madrid, who lifted their fifth Champions League trophy since 2014.
