Andy Reid rooting for Giants’ Mike Kafka to land head coaching job

New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is considered a rising star and generated significant head coaching interest this offseason.

Kafka met with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals for their vacant positions and remains a favorite in Arizona.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who employed Kafka before he joined the Giants, is rooting for his former assistant to land a head coaching gig. Specifically, Reid would like to see him end up with the Cardinals.

“He is very intelligent, a great human being,” Reid said, via Newsday. “The quarterback [Kyler Murray] will love him. He’ll challenge him to be better than he even is now. But he’ll do a great job and challenge the team. The guys will respond.

“I think he’d be tremendous.”

The Giants, of course, are hoping Kafka sticks around to help create some consistency. Quarterback Daniel Jones has had four different offensive coordinators over his first four seasons and they’d rather not hit the reset button again — especially if they give DJ a lucrative long-term deal.

But the Giants won’t stand in Kafka’s way, either. They’ve worked on some contingency plans and will be able to adjust on the fly if Kafka does ultimately leave.

The Cardinals’ decision on their next head coach is expected to be made this week.
