Andy Murray has claimed one of his biggest wins since his comeback from hip surgery, beating world No5 Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the Boss Open semi-finals in Stuttgart.
The former British No1 overcame Tsitsipas, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year, in straight sets 7-6 (4), 6-3 to set up a semi-final meeting with either Marton Fucsovics or Nick Kyrgios.
The win is Murray’s first over a player ranked inside the world’s top five since he beat Novak Djokovic in the final of the season-ending ATP Finals back in 2016 and could hardly be more timely, with the start of Wimbledon now less than three weeks away.
Murray had begun his SW19 preparations at the Surbiton Trophy, where he was the No1 seed, last week, but only reached the semi-final before losing to America’s Denis Kudla.
In 2019, Murray had appeared to be on the brink of retirement during an emotional press conference at the Australian Open but underwent hip surgery for the second time in his career and has gradually been battling his way back to form and fitness.
Earlier this year, he reached his first ATP Tour final since 2019 at the Sydney Tennis Classic, before losing to top seed Aslan Karatsev.
