Andy Murray predicts future as he picks out tennis’ next ‘Big Three’

Tennis star Andy Murray has opened up on the players he believes can make up the sport’s next ‘Big Three’.

The men’s game has been dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who have won an astonishing 61 Grand Slam singles titles between them.

As the clock continues to tick on their glittering careers, Murray, 34, who was long part of a ‘Big Four’ and consistently competed with the legendary trio - albeit without enjoying the same level as success in the Majors - has looked to the future.

He shared his thoughts on those he thinks can take over the mantle and solidify themselves as members of tennis’ next big three.

“The players that I like to watch? I like watching [Stefanos] Tsitsipas, I think he has a great game,” Murray told the Moselle Open Youtube Channel.

Tsitsipas has already solidified himself as a top 10 player and reached the French Open final in 2021 and the semi-finals of the Australian Open in three of the last four years.

“I like watching [Carlos] Alcaraz as well. I know he is a little young but I think he’s going to be great for tennis. He is a top player,” said Murray.

The Spaniard has received rave reviews since making his debut on the ATP tour aged 16 in 2020.

Last month, the teenager won his first title at the Rio Open, and became the youngest player to win an ATP 500 title at the age of 18, and is now inside the world’s top 20.

“[Lorenzo] Musetti on clay, I’ve really enjoyed watching his game as well, so there isn’t just one,” Murray added.

Musetti is yet to win a singles title on tour, but has shown his talent in an incredible match with Djokovic at last year’s Roland Garros, where he held a two-set lead before succumbing to injury and an eventual defeat.

Murray feels the Italian will be a force on clay in years to come.

The two-time Wimbledon champion also expects more from Daniil Medvedev, who last month became the 27th man to earn the world number one ranking since records began in 1973.

He won his first Grand Slam at last year’s US Open and according to Murray the 26-year-old is destined for more success in the game.

“And I know he’s not young, but I do really like watching [Daniil] Medvedev play too. I think he’s got a very different game style to a lot of players,” the former British number one added.

“He looks very unorthodox and I like people that aren’t your textbook tennis player.

“It depends, a lot of coaches I think in the UK are very fascinated by technique and strokes, but he doesn’t have that. He is unbelievably smart on the court.”
