Andy Murray poked fun at rival Novak Djokovic and his plant-based diet at the Laver Cup gala dinner ahead of this weekend's event.
The Brit has joined Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic as part of Team Europe in the Ryder Cup style tournament this weekend against Team World. Despite being on the same team for the tournament Murray had an hilarious introduction for the 21-time Grand Slam tournament winner.
"The player that I'm going to welcome up onto the stage, he loves to eat plants," said Murray. "He celebrates all of his Grand Slam victories by going wild on vegetable smoothies. He's gluten free."
Looking embarrassed by introduction Djokovic shook his head walking onto the stage before shaking hands with all of the other players on stage and then giving Murray a hug.
Djokovic who has a gluten allergy plus an intolerance of dairy and refined sugars moved to a plant-based diet years ago to help his performance. His parents used to own a pizza restaurant and he ate there regularly.
Speaking two years ago Djokovic said: "Because of my family, I’ve always had a love for food. But as an athlete, it became something more—the fuel that determines how I play, how I recover and how alert I am on the court.
"I attribute a great deal of my professional success to my diet."
The team tournament has been embraced by the 'big four' Grand Slam winners with Murray also being the subject of jokes earlier in the week.
Murray revealed that he had dinner with the Federer and Bjorn Borg earlier this week and admitted that he was ‘ripped’ by the team Europe captain
“I went for dinner with Roger and Bjorn last night and Bjorn was ripping me for most of the dinner,” Murray said. “To be honest, I have never really met him before, so that started for me last night.”
