Andy Lee-trained Sonny Bill Williams destroys Barry Hall with first round knockout

Sonny Bill Williams brutally knocked out Barry Hall in their heavyweight contest on Wednesday.

The All Blacks legend took on the AFL great in Sydney with Andy Lee in his corner.

Williams landed two left hooks early in the fight after coming out the more aggressive fighter.

He put Hall, who is no stranger to Irish sports fans having played for Australia against Ireland in International Rules, on the back foot pretty much immediately.

Hall was on the floor 45 seconds into the fight after Williams got him on the ropes with a powerful left hook just 15 seconds in.

Hall, 45 and nine years younger than Williams, was knocked down a second time, but the fight was allowed to continue.

It didn't last much longer though as he was floored with a right hook to the cheek seconds later and the referee stepped in.

Lee has stated that he can see the former rugby star, who now has a boxing record of 9-0, one day fighting for a world heavyweight title.

He said before the fight: "My ambition with Sonny is to one day fight for the heavyweight championship.

"It is well within his reach. With the progression he has made in the past six to eight weeks, the way I see him going in the future, with the right fights and the right training, he certainly has the ability.

"Is that the greatest story in sports history, if he fights for the heavyweight title? The blueprint is there. He's a different person altogether."
