Andy Burnham – the so-called “King of the North” – is now widely expected to become Britain’s next prime minister after Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday morning.

After Wes Streeting, considered Mr Burnham’s main rival for the Labour leadership, said he would back the new Makerfield MP for the job, it now appears the former Manchester mayor has a clear path to No 10.
