'Turned into Beckham' - Andros Townsend sends Everton message to Frank Lampard after Idrissa Gueye stars at World Cup
Andros Townsend joked that Everton teammate Idrissa Gueye had 'turned into Beckham' after the midfielder's wonderful free-kick led to the winning goal in Senegal's 2-1 win against Ecuador.
Gueye swung in a wonderful deep free-kick on 70 minutes for what was the eventual winner, courtesy of Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly - via the shoulder of Ecuador's Felix Torres. Idrissa Gueye suffers huge blow ahead of potential England World Cup clash
Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye will miss Senegal's first World Cup knockout tie in 20 years after he was booked during his country's 2-1 victory over Ecuador on Tuesday.
A penalty from Ismailia Sarr and a crisp first-time volley from defender Kalidou Koulibaly either side of Moises Caicedo's equaliser was enough for the 2022 African Cup of Nations winners to seal progression into the first knockout round as runners-up of Group A.
Senegal will face the winners of Group B on Sunday afternoon, which is expected to be England, unless Gareth Southgate's side are heavily defeated by Wales in Al Rayyan on Tuesday evening.
