Ahead of the Super Bowl versus the Cincinnati Bengals, it was assumed that Andrew Whitworth was playing his final game for the Los Angeles Rams — and in the NFL. With the Rams taking care of business in the Super Bowl, it all but guaranteed that Whitworth would walk away as a champion.
While Whitworth admitted that he’s leaning toward retirement, he appeared on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday to reveal that he’s “Staying active” ahead of his ultimate decision.
“I’m staying active, working out, training myself,” Whitworth said. “But I don’t know yet. I still think it’s one of those – I’m close. It’s in the next week or two I’m going to decide what I’m going to do.
Following the Super Bowl, Whitworth uttered that he would make a decision on his future with the Rams in a “couple of weeks.” The 40-year-old offensive tackle is taking all of the time he needs to mull over his options.
People shouldn’t read too much into Whitworth remaining active as he could simply just want to stay in shape. After playing 16 years in the NFL, the veteran tackle is likely accustomed to the routine of having to take care of his body, so he continues to stick with his normal offseason routine.
During Whitworth’s appearance on GMFB, he discussed wanting to remain close to football, whether he’s in pads or not. Whitworth mentioned the possibility of him getting involved in television when he decides to hang up his cleats (likely after seeing what Sean McVay was reportedly offered to leave for television).
“Here’s the thing: No matter what, I’m gonna be involved in football,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m gonna be doing, I might be sitting by you one day. I might be sitting in the Rams facility doing something else, so you never know. We’ll see what happens. I’ll be involved in football. Football’s my passion. I love this game, I love the NFL, and I can’t wait to be a part of it one way or another. So don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere.
It seems the door is open for everything, from TV to coaching to working with the Rams in some capacity.
