Andrew Tate will remain behind bars after a Romanian court refused his latest bail request amid an investigation into alleged sex trafficking.
The self-proclaimed misogynist influencer, 36, was arrested in Romania on suspicion of human trafficking and rape on December 29. The former kickboxer was detained alongside his brother and two Romanian nationals. None of the four has yet been formally charged in the case.
His appeal against a 30-day extension of his detention in Romania has been denied by the court on Monday meaning he will stay in the jail where he has been moaning about the “cockroaches, lice and bed bugs” on social media.
Tate’s spokesperson said afterwards: “We are disappointed in this outcome as we had high hopes to see Andrew reunited with his family. His legal team will be appealing this decision within the 48hr time frame.”
Tristan’s bail appeal hearing is tomorrow.
Tate was arrested after an organised crime unit raided his property in Bucharest. He and his brother have been under criminal investigation since April.
DIICOT said in a statement after the December arrests that it had identified six victims in the human trafficking case who were subjected to “acts of physical violence and mental coercion” and were sexually exploited by members of the alleged crime group.
The agency said victims were lured with pretences of love and later intimidated, placed under surveillance and subjected to other control tactics while being coerced into engaging in pornographic acts for the financial gain of the crime group.
In January, Romanian authorities descended on a compound near Bucharest linked with the Tate brothers and towed away a fleet of luxury cars that included a Rolls-Royce, a Ferrari and a Porsche.
They reported seizing assets worth an estimated £3.24 million.
Prosecutors have said that if they can prove the cars’ owners gained money through illicit activities such as human trafficking, the assets would be used to cover the expenses of the investigation and to compensate victims.
Tate also unsuccessfully appealed against the asset seizure coming just days after he took on Greta Thunberg on Twitter showing off his luxury fleet of C02 emitting cars.
Tate who has been based mainly in Romania since 2017, is an online influencer and self-described misogynist who has built up a following of millions of fans, particularly among young men drawn to his hyper-macho image.
