Andrew Flintoff to continue England cricket return with role on Lions tour of UAE

Andrew Flintoff is set to continue his involvement with the England cricket set-up as part of the coaching team for next month’s Lions trip to the United Arab Emirates.

The former England all-rounder took on the role of an “unpaid” mentor and coach during England’s one-day series against New Zealand.

It was his first public outing of any note after suffering serious injuries in a crash while filming for the BBC television series Top Gear.

The Lions squad for the UAE tour has already been announced and the England and Wales Cricket Board have said they are waiting to finalise their coaching line-up for that particular tour.

But Flintoff has been given the nod to play a role within that, and could yet have further involvement with England cricket beyond that.

The 45-year-old may not play a role in the entire tour, which spans from November 16 to December 7, and the nature of his exact role remains unclear.

Flintoff will work with England internationals with the likes of Matthew Potts, Matthew Fisher, Josh Tongue and Rehan Ahmed in the squad. In addition, Ollie Pope and Jack Leach will train out in the UAE as they continue their rehabilitation from a dislocated right shoulder and lower back stress fracture respectively.

Also part of the Lions squad is Tom Hartley to whom Flintoff awarded his international cap when he made his first public appearance since his accident in the summer.

The Lions squad also includes the son of former England captain Michael Atherton, Josh de Caires, who scored 61 runs and took four wickets in his final first-class game of the summer last month for Middlesex.

Flintoff was taken to hospital after a high-speed crash at Dunsfold Aerodrome in December, and it was reported last week a settlement had been reached with the BBC regarding his injuries.
