What had been seen by some as inevitable was finally confirmed on Saturday afternoon as David de Gea announced his departure from Manchester United.

The general consensus among the fans and pundits is the right decision has been made but in the wrong way. United's ongoing negotiations have rumbled on past his contract's expiry and hung over the player's wedding. leaving a bad taste in the mouth of many.

Cole outlines Mason Mount hope

Andy Cole believes the signing of Mason Mount is a positive one for Manchester United and hopes the midfielder can play his part in taking the Reds back closer to the top.

Mount has become United's first signing of the summer transfer window. He has penned a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months following his move from Chelsea.

United had to be patient to land the 24-year-old England international after the Stamford Bridge side aimed to secure the biggest fee possible for a player who was out of contract in 2024. Eventually after a couple of bids were turned down by Chelsea, an initial fee of £55m plus an extra £5m in performance-related add-ons was agreed.

It's official. David de Gea has played his final match for Manchester United.

The Spaniard's exit has perhaps been overdue, but despite knowing for a long time that he won't be their first choice anymore, United have managed to horribly mishandle his departure when he deserved a far better farewell.

For all of his flaws, De Gea is a modern United legend and arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the club. His efforts deserved to be recognised by a celebration of these achievements, and they would have been had the club acted swiftly in the latter stages of last season.
