Andre Onana is Manchester United's prime goalkeeper target amid David de Gea uncertainty

Andre Onana is Manchester United's prime target should they move for a new No.1 goalkeeper.

Inter Milan custodian Onana, 27, played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and is highly regarded for his ball-playing abilities as well as his shot-stopping.

Onana only joined Inter last year and is under contract until 2027. United have a tight budget due to Financial Fair Play restrictions and the thriftiness of the club's owners, the Glazer family.

A striker is viewed as the most pressing issue yet United have already signed midfielder Mason Mount in a deal that could rise to £60m.

Any move for Onana is dependent on David de Gea's situation. De Gea's United contract expired last week but the club still want to hold face-to-face discussions about a possible renewal.

Sources say there was a shift in United's position on De Gea towards the end of the season when he committed errors in the defeats to Sevilla, West Ham and Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

The MEN revealed in May there were doubts over De Gea's No.1 status at United next season and senior figures at the club want to move on from the Spaniard. United started exploring options to sign a new first-choice 'keeper last month.

United monitored Bart Verbruggen but he completed a £16.3million transfer to Brighton this week.

Dean Henderson remains intent on leaving United and has been perplexed by suggestions he could stay when he is one of the club's most sellable assets.

The Manchester Evening News revealed in May Henderson, 26, was informed of Forest's intention to buy him after they secured their Premier League survival.

Forest have mooted a possible £30million deal for Henderson, who is recovering from surgery on a thigh strain that has kept him sidelined since January.

United sources say they need to talk to Henderson to gauge if he wants to stay or go but he has no intention of occupying a No.2 role.

Figures at United insist they have "tactical options” for the goalkeeper situation this summer and “strategic options” for next season.

The only four available 'keepers ahead of next week's first pre-season friendly against Leeds United are Tom Heaton, Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar and Radek Vitek. Heaton, 37, is the only one who has played for United.
