Andi Weimann hands Bristol City an injury scare during international duty with Austria

Bristol City are sweating on the fitness of Andi Weimann after he was left out of Austria's squad for their win over Italy on Sunday.

The City forward, 31, was introduced at half-time against Andorra last week for the first of their double-header of matches but failed to feature in Ralf Rangnick's squad just four days later.

According to Austrian website Sport.Orf, Weimann took a knock to the knee against Andorra which forced him out of the game. A brief summary of his absence said: "(Weimann) was hit on the knee in the 1-0 win against Andorra, an exact diagnosis is pending."

There has been no further evidence on the severity of the injury but Nigel Pearson will be keeping his fingers crossed that it won't keep him out of the Christmas period. City return to Championship action on December 10 with a trip to Rotherham.

However, it is a notable concern given the amount of football Weimann has played over the last 18 months. He started in every league game last season then had just 10 days off over the summer after representing his country in their Nations League matches. He subsequently picked up a minor leg injury against France, keeping him out of the Croatia game but returned fit for his club.

His form took a dip following the September international break, which saw Pearson bring him to the bench in the victory over West Brom for the first time in a league feature when fit since February 2020. That continued against Reading four days later before missing the Swansea game through illness.

Weimann's brief spell out of the starting XI seemed to rejuvenate his game and he ended his 16-game goal drought in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough before the World Cup break. There is also an understandable concern regarding his knee given his previous history with the ACL injury that kept him out of action for almost the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign.

With Antoine Semenyo representing Ghana in the World Cup, there is the potential that he could miss City's next league match should they progress through their group. The Black Stars face Portugal on Thursday before facing South Korea and Uruguay on December 2.

Meanwhile, City have been linked with a loan move for Brighton's young striker Evan Ferguson on loan along with six other Championship clubs by the Daily Mail. However, Bristol Live understands there is no interest from the Robins in the 18-year-old.
