VIJAYAWADA: Kandukur police in Prakasam district arrested notorious interstate criminal M Prakash of Tamil Nadu for involvement in 10 highway thefts in Chittoor, Prakasam, and Nellore districts. Police also recovered 18 lakh in cash, a truck and boxes of garments worth 23.6 lakh.
Associates of the accused, identified as Muthu, Ponnaraj and Kumar, residents of Chennai, are yet to be arrested.
According to police, in August 2021, one Rohit Phougat, manager of Trans Cargo India, Guwahati, lodged a complaint stating that medicine boxes containing goods worth 7,62,800 were stolen from a parked container of the company at Tettu village on NH-16. Police formed special teams to nab the criminals who had committed six similar offences. The teams visited Tamil Nadu to gather information from RTO offices and toll plazas in the neighbouring state.
On August 27, 2021, the accused Prakash and his associates entered Andhra Pradesh and stole boxes of readymade garments from a parked container truck near Isukadarsi village under Martur police station. Kandukur police, who were tracking the accused, tried to stop the vehicle at Tangutur toll plaza. The accused managed to escape by speeding through the checkpost. The police gave chase but the accused abandoned the truck and fled from Kollurupadu village.
Upon receipt of credible information on Sunday, police arrested Prakash at Madhavaram Circle and recovered 40 boxes of garments and cash.
The gang had looted property worth over 25 lakh in 2021 and disposed and sold the property in illegal markets in Chennai and Hyderabad.
