Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Somu Veerraju demanded that the State government immediately withdraw the hike in domestic power tariff as it entailed a huge expenditure for the consumers who were already undergoing turmoil due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the economy.
Staging a demonstration at Dharna Chowk on Friday in protest against the increase in power tariff, Mr. Veerraju wondered if the government was aware of the tremendous burden that would be imposed on the consumers, and disputed the government’s claims that the tariff has only been increased marginally.
He alleged that the government was looking to make up for the loss in revenue caused by the pandemic and its ‘failure on various fronts’.
“Public debt is mounting but the government is least bothered about streamlining its finances. The power tariff hike should be rolled back, failing which the BJP will intensify its agitation,” Mr. Veerraju said.
Party leaders B. Sriram and D. Umamaheswara Raju were present.
