A Desert That Was Once a Shallow Sea
The Rann of Kutch looks nothing like an ocean. It is flat, salt-white, and so dry that it cracks in summer. But roughly 50 million years ago, this region sat at the edge of the ancient Tethys Sea, a warm, shallow body of water that no longer exists. The sedimentary rock left behind by that vanished sea is why Kutch has become one of the most significant sites in the world for early whale research.
