Analyzing the Week 3 Saints injury report: Who’s in, who’s out, who has a chance?

Buy Saints Tickets

We’ve got a long list of players to consider on the Week 3 New Orleans Saints injury report — but most of them are Green Bay Packers. The Packers pre-emptively ruled out two players and five more are questionable for Sunday’s matchup at Lambeau Field.

That’s not to say the Saints are at full health. But at least this week they have the benefits of a healthy roster on their side. Just one of their players has been ruled out for Sunday’s game while another is doubtful to play and two others are questionable. Let’s break it down:

Full

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
  • Three Saints players were listed on the injury report this week while receiving treatment, but they each practiced fully and are expected to play: QB Taysom Hill (knee), RB Kendre Miller (hamstring), and S Jordan Howden (finger).
  • Just one Packers player was listed on the injury report this week as a full participant in practice: P Daniel Whelan (finger), who got his start with the Saints. He earned All-XFL recognition with the DC Defenders this spring.
  • Another Packers player, OLB Rashan Gary (knee), was limited at practice but is expected to play.

Questionable

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
  • CB Paulson Adebo (hamstring) was limited on Friday’s injury report after practicing the first two days fully, which feels ominous. It’s a good sign that he was not immediately ruled out but this is something to monitor. If he can’t play on Sunday, expect Isaac Yiadom to fill in with Alontae Taylor remaining in the slot. He’s questionable to play.
  • S Ugo Amadi (knee) practiced fully early in the week but was limited Thursday and Friday, and he’s questionable to play. He doesn’t normally see many snaps as Taylor’s backup in the slot but between an injury to Adebo and Marcus Maye’s suspension the Saints could be thin in the secondary.
  • Five Packers players are questionable for Sunday after either being limited in practice or held out altogether: LT David Bakhtiari (knee), WR Christian Watson (hamstring), RB Aaron Jones (hamstring), OLB Lukas Van Ness (elbow), and CB Jaire Alexander (back).

Doubtful

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
  • Just one player received the doubtful status this week: Saints TE Foster Moreau (ankle). He didn’t participate in Wednesday’s walkthrough, was limited at practice on Thursday, and was held out on Friday. He’s primarily worked as a blocking tight end rather than a receiver. If he can’t play, the Saints could expand Jimmy Graham’s usage in that role (where he’s been more effective than you may think) or call up Tommy Hudson or Michael Jacobson from the practice squad.

  • The Saints ruled out just one player: RB Jamaal Williams (hamstring), who was injured early in Monday night’s win over the Carolina Panthers. Williams was held out of practice all week. New Orleans can lean on Kendre Miller and Tony Jones Jr., but they could also bring up Kirk Merritt or Jordan Mims from the practice squad. Alvin Kamara returns to the team next Monday.
  • Two Packers players have already been ruled out: LG Elgton Jenkins (knee) and S Zayne Anderson (hamstring).

Injured reserve

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports
  • The Saints already have six players on injured reserve, though three of them are eligible to return later this season: WR Tre’Quan Smith, DE Payton Turner, and LB Ryan ConnellyOG Trai Turner, LB Andrew Dowell, and RB Eno Benjamin are out for the year.
  • Two Packers players are on injured reserve, in TE Tyler Davis and OT Luke Tenuta — with CB Eric Stokes unavailable on the PUP list.
