'An early April fools?': Bolton Wanderers fans left bemused after stadium renamed

Fans of Bolton Wanderers have been left bewildered and amused after the club announced a 'tongue-in-cheek' name change for its stadium.

The club announced yesterday they have agreed a deal including naming rights with local building manufacturer Toughsheet - turning their home ground into the Toughsheet Community Stadium this summer.

Speaking to the Bolton News, Toughsheet's boss said he hopes the 'schoolboy humour' will be a 'great laugh' when television pundits try to name the ground. But fans had mixed feelings, with some branding the new name 'embarrassing' while others saw the funny side.

On Twitter, Martin Dootson called Bolton Wanderers' new stadium name is 'proper embarrassing', saying 'the jokes write themselves'.

And Jez Fayerman suggested that someone might have scheduled an April Fool's Day tweet a little early, writing: "Bolton Wanderers here coming up with their April Fool’s Day Tweet nice and early, and then completely mis-scheduling it. At least I assume that’s what happened."

But others were entertained by the rebrand, with one fan tweeting: "Best laugh I've had today - schoolboy humour at it's best. Well done Bolton Wanderers."

Others harked back to the stadium's old days, when it was known as the Reebok Stadium. One fan tweeted: "Much as I find the new name of Bolton Wanderers' stadium amusing (Toughsheet) locals will all still call it The Reebok."

And another joined Toughsheet boss Doug Mercer in sparing a thought for the TV pundits forced to say the name with a straight face, writing: "Thoughts and prayers with the Bolton Wanderers stadium announcer for the next 5 years. God speed, you brave soldier."

But all fans agreed - whether you like the new name or not, its tough...
