Amit Malviya out, Deepak Mhaskey in: BJP's new IT cell chief is a Chemistry professor and an expert in electoral data

The BJP has appointed Deepak Mhaskey as its new IT Cell chief, replacing Amit Malviya in a key organisational change that puts a Chhattisgarh-based political organiser at the centre of the party’s national digital operations. Mhaskey brings a professional background that stretches from Chemistry teaching and agriculture to electoral data analysis and public-sector governance.

His appointment gives the BJP’s digital team a new face with a career that is quite different from the conventional profile of a political social-media strategist.

Who is Deepak Mhaskey, BJP IT cell's new chief?

Born in 1968, Mhaskey holds an MSc in Chemistry. He also has a diploma in cement technology and a certified course in computer programming.

His career began in education, where he worked as a college Chemistry professor. He later moved into agriculture and horticulture and has more than three decades of experience in the field, including organic farming.

He also had a brief stint in road construction before his professional work increasingly moved towards data and political organisation.

Deepak Mhaskey's electoral data experience

One of the more unusual aspects of Mhaskey’s profile is his work with electoral data. His profile submitted to Engineers India Limited says he has a particular interest in collecting and analysing data, especially electoral information and details related to government beneficiary schemes.

The profile also says reports prepared by him were submitted to and used by private and government agencies. That experience could be significant in his new BJP role, where digital communication, political outreach and data-driven campaigns are closely connected.

Mhaskey’s BJP connection goes back to 2009

Mhaskey has been associated with the BJP organisation in Chhattisgarh for years. His LinkedIn profile lists his association with the BJP’s Chhattisgarh IT Cell from 2009. It also identifies him as a State Spokesperson of the BJP in Chhattisgarh.

His new national role therefore marks a move from years of state-level organisational work to a much more prominent position within the BJP’s national digital setup.

From BJP organisation to EIL board

Mhaskey also has experience outside party politics. In November 2021, he was appointed a non-official independent director of Engineers India, a government-owned engineering consultancy and engineering, procurement and construction company under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

He was reappointed for a second term in March 2025. His tenure on the EIL board ended in March this year, according to the company’s regulatory filing.

During his time on the board, he served on the Audit Committee, CSR Committee, Risk Management Committee and Nomination and Remuneration Committee.

His EIL profile also records his involvement in initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, health camps, rural libraries and efforts to promote awareness of digital transactions in rural areas.

He also holds a Chhattisgarh government role

Mhaskey’s professional journey also includes a government-facing position in Chhattisgarh. He is the chairman of Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Limited, a state government entity involved in medical supplies and related services. The corporation’s digital dashboard lists him as chairman.

This gives Mhaskey experience across party organisation, electoral data, government programmes and public-sector administration.

Why his background matters for the BJP IT Cell

Mhaskey’s data experience is likely to be one of the most closely watched aspects of his new assignment.

His professional profile specifically highlights work involving national-level electoral data and information on beneficiaries of government welfare schemes.

The BJP’s IT Cell plays an important role in the party’s online communication and digital outreach. Mhaskey’s combination of political organisation and data analysis could therefore shape how he approaches the role.

His elevation also marks the arrival of a relatively low-profile Chhattisgarh organiser on the national political stage, replacing Amit Malviya in one of the BJP’s most visible digital positions.
