CHENNAI: These are tough times for Sri Lanka as it has been battling both economic and political crisis for the last few months. Despite the unprecedented situation the island nation finds itself in --- its chess teams have left no stone unturned in their preparations for the upcoming 44th Olympiad.
Even as thousands of protestors barged into Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence last week amid public anger over the economic meltdown, the chess teams were in the middle of an online session. "We were going on with our training routine at that point of time. We have a job at hand and would like to do that to the best of our abilities," Luxman Wijesuriya, president of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), told TOI.
