Americans Say Their Free Time Is Worth $87 an Hour — But What Are They Actually Paying to Save It?
An hour of free time can feel priceless, but convenience services come with real costs. Comparing the extra expense with the time genuinely saved can help households decide which purchases deserve a place in the budget – Shutterstock

Americans put a price on their free time, and apparently, an hour away from chores is worth $87. That sounds generous until the grocery delivery fee, cleaning bill, and takeout receipt start competing for the same dollars.

The real question isn’t whether free time has value. Nobody needs a spreadsheet to appreciate a Saturday without laundry. The harder question is whether paying someone else to handle a task actually saves enough time, money, and aggravation to justify the expense. Some purchases genuinely make life easier. Others simply move the work somewhere else while quietly charging a premium for the privilege.
