American TV presenter Laura Sanko claims Ireland is part of the UK in Conor McGregor debate

An American TV presenter claimed that Ireland is part of Britain in a debate over the top five active UK fighters in the UFC.

Laura Sanko listed Conor McGregor at number two on the list behind Tom Aspinall and ahead of Leon Edwards, Arnold Allen and Paddy Pimblett.

When pointed out that McGregor is from Ireland by other pundits, including UFC legend Daniel Cormier, she replied by saying: "Yes he is [from the UK]. The United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain."

But Sanko quickly backtracked on the comments and admitted she had made a mistake by saying: "I'm wrong."

Worryingly, a number of people commented on social media saying that Ireland is part of the UK, with one person explaining to them: "The number of Americans that don’t know the difference between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is ridiculous."

Someone else stated: "Why are there people trying to debate this. He's not even part of North Dublin let alone Northern Irish."

It is far from the first time that McGregor has been claimed as British, with the BBC saying he was the "first UFC champion from the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland" after his 2015 win over Chad Mendes before editing the article.

An article by The Sun in the same year also referenced McGregor as British, saying that Brad Pickett had inspired a generation of UK fighters, including the Dubliner.

A line in the piece read: "The bantamweight built a house out of his passion and helped pave the way for British stars like Conor McGregor to star in the UFC."

The former two-weight champion has not fought since suffering a horror leg break against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, but he is expected to return to the octagon next year.

And UFC President Dana White stated this week that his comeback fight could come against Michael Chandler.

On how far away McGregor's return is, White stated: "He [McGregor] is not retiring anytime soon but can see the light at the end of the tunnel."
