In a significant development, 10 Americans who were imprisoned in Venezuela are set to be repatriated to the United States after being held for months and even years. The Biden administration has struck a prisoner swap deal with the authoritarian regime of Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuelan ruler, in exchange for a close ally of Maduro. This move has garnered both support and criticism, but President Biden has stood by the decision, emphasizing the importance of freeing American citizens who were illegally detained.
According to State Department officials, the six Americans who were officially recognized as wrongfully detained by the U.S. Government will arrive in San Antonio, Texas, tonight. The prisoner swap also includes the release of Leonard Francis, famously known as Fat Leonard, a corrupt military contractor responsible for the largest bribery scandal in U.S. Naval history. After his conviction in 2015, Francis fled to Venezuela. The United States has eased some economic sanctions against Venezuela due to the country's steps toward holding free elections and its agreement to extradite Alex Saab, a Venezuelan ally facing charges of corruption and money laundering.
