An American man, Travis Timmerman, who had been missing for seven months, was found safe in Syria after being discovered by locals in southern Damascus. Timmerman, 29, was walking barefoot in the streets when he was found. His parents expressed immense relief upon hearing the news, as they had feared the worst during his disappearance.

Richard Gardiner, Timmerman's stepfather, described the emotional moment when they received confirmation of his safety. He mentioned calling Timmerman's mother, Stacey Timmerman, to share the good news, leading to tears of joy and relief.

According to Timmerman, he had entered Syria as a pilgrim for spiritual purposes but was subsequently detained in a Syrian prison for several months. He recounted how his cell door was broken down by armed men, allowing him to escape with a group of individuals attempting to reach Jordan.

Stacey Timmerman expressed her desire for her son to return home safely, highlighting the ordeal their family had endured during his absence. The recent release of thousands of prisoners in Syria, following the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad by rebels, coincided with Timmerman's escape from captivity.

The story of Travis Timmerman's unexpected discovery and subsequent escape from a Syrian prison serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by individuals in conflict zones. His family's emotional journey, from despair to relief, underscores the impact of such harrowing experiences on loved ones.
