Russian prosecutors have sent the espionage case against an American journalist to court, accusing him of spying for the CIA. The journalist, who was arrested in March 2023 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, is facing charges of espionage, becoming the first American journalist to be arrested on such charges since the Cold War.
The Russian Prosecutor General’s office announced that they had approved the indictment, alleging that the journalist was acting on CIA instructions and had collected secret information about a Russian tank factory. The Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed that the journalist used conspiratorial methods to carry out these illegal actions.
The journalist, the US government, and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, have all denied the charges. The US State Department has declared the journalist as wrongfully detained and has called for his immediate release.
Since his arrest, the journalist has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo Prison, and his pre-trial detention period has been extended multiple times. The case has garnered international attention and raised concerns about press freedom and diplomatic relations between the US and Russia.
