Police in Honduras have reported the arrest of American citizen Gilbert Reyes Bermúdez in the Dominican Republic in connection with the alleged killing of three women on the Honduran island of Roatán. The 36-year-old suspect is accused of murdering María Antonia Cruz, Nikendra McCoy, and Dione Solórzano after socializing with them on January 6. The following day, Reyes Bermúdez reportedly fled Honduras, and the women were reported missing. Their bodies, bearing gunshot wounds, were discovered in a vehicle three days later.
One of the victims, Dione Solórzano, is said to be Reyes' ex-partner. Reyes Bermúdez was apprehended in the Dominican Republic on March 16, where authorities confiscated $205, 600 pesos, his American passport, two cell phones, and various personal items. The extradition process to return Reyes to Honduras has commenced, as announced by the National Police of Honduras on social media.
The Honduran government disclosed that crime scene evidence and witness testimonies will be pivotal in the legal proceedings against Reyes Bermúdez. Notably, Honduras has the highest rate of femicide, the deliberate killing of women, among Latin American nations and ranks fifth globally in this tragic statistic, according to the Tico Times.
