American bakery Cinnabon to open Newcastle cafe in former Patisserie Valerie unit

An American bakery is set to open in the former Patisserie Valerie unit in Newcastle city centre.

Cinnabon will take over the space on Grainger Street with plans to open a sit-in cafe this summer. The international bakery chain, which has a number of franchises across the UK, is known for its cinnamon rolls and coffee.

Cinnabon bosses have confirmed that Newcastle customers will be able to enjoy its regular menu of cakes and sweet treats, alongside hot and cold drinks when it launches this summer. A number of new jobs are also set to be created by the opening.

The new Cinnabon cafe will breathe new life into the city centre unit which has stood empty for more than four years since the closure of Patisserie Valerie in January 2019. The Newcastle store was one of 70 branches to shut after the business called in administrators when it failed to reach an agreement with its bank to extend its lending facilities.

Work is set to get under way to transform the cafe with bosses due to confirm an opening date in the coming weeks.

A Cinnabon spokeswoman said: "I can confirm a Cinnabon bakery is set to open in Newcastle later this year."

Meanwhile, Newcastle City Council said it has received a planning application from Cinnabon representatives for a sign to be erected over the building. A city council spokeswoman said: "We can confirm Euro Garages has submitted an application for advertisement consent (covering the signs on the outside of the building) which is under consideration."
