Ambitious Waterford confirm appointment of ex-Ireland striker Jonathan Walters

Jonathan Walters has been tasked with bringing Waterford to the “next level” on and off the pitch in his new role as technical director.

The former Ireland international is a high-profile appointment by the ambitious First Division side.

He will share the role with Waterford’s sister club Fleetwood Town in England’s League One.

A former Bolton, Hull, Wrexham, Chester, Ipswich, Stoke and Burnley player, with over 600 appearances at club and international level, Blues chief Andy Pilley hopes to tap into Walters’ experience of the game at all levels.

He also has coaching experience in the Ireland Under-19 set-up.

According to a club statement, he will oversee the club’s long-term football strategy and will work closely with head coach Danny Searle as well as the club’s Academy and medical departments.

Waterford chairman Pilley said: “We are delighted to welcome such a well respected name in the game to the club in a role which we feel is hugely important.

“He’s also someone who knows the Irish game well and is a proud Irishman.

“Jonathan is an experienced and knowledgeable character who can help the club move to the next level in structure, recruitment and sporting success on the pitch.

“It’s a hugely exciting appointment and these are exciting times for Waterford Football Club. We want to take the club to the next level.”
