Amazon unveils cloud trends for 2023

Mr Vatsun says that the company has seen a significant acceleration of cloud adoption among industries and organisations of all sizes throughout Asean post-pandemic.

Industry use cases, simulation and machine learning are among the trends associated with the rise of cloud computing usage in 2023, according to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud service arm of tech giant Amazon.

In October last year, AWS unveiled its plan to open an Asia-Pacific (Bangkok) Region in Thailand. AWS defines regions as physical locations where it clusters data centres.

According to its website, the Bangkok Region is expected to be launched soon. The firm also vowed to invest more than 190 billion baht in Thailand over the next 15 years to enhance the country's digital economy.

"We still see the continuity of digital transformation and cloud adoption in Asean as organisations are pursuing agility and resilience," said Vatsun Thirapatarapong, country manager for AWS Thailand.

The company has seen a significant acceleration of cloud adoption among industries and organisations of all sizes throughout Asean since the pandemic.

Many organisations leverage AWS cloud services to run critical workloads while ensuring cost savings, operational efficiency, resilience and security, Mr Vatsun said.

"We will continue to invest in Thailand and make our services available close to users," he said.

The Region in Bangkok will let local users have access to more than 200 cloud services with data security.

The approach also enables customers to run applications that need low latency of less than a millisecond, such as animation, entertainment, simulations and the metaverse.

According to global research firm Gartner, public cloud spending in Thailand is expected to grow by 31.8% to 54.4 billion baht in 2023, up from 41.3 billion baht in 2022.

Infrastructure-as-a-service is the category of cloud services forecast to experience the highest end-user spending growth in 2023, with a 41.9% increase.

Mr Vatsun said Thailand is now in the second phase of cloud adoption that embraces artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things and automation.

Some organisations are in the third phase, through the adoption of advanced technologies and sustainability.

In Thailand, AWS will this year focus on supporting customers to build innovation and intelligence.

The firm is targeting various businesses, particularly in financial services, banking, securities, insurance, retail, and manufacturing.

Mr Vatsun said AWS is committed to building skilled workforces.

It has trained 700,000 people in Asean and 13 million globally. A global target of 29 million is expected to be hit by 2025.

Mr Vatsun also highlighted five key trends that are in line with an increase in cloud adoption.

First, he said cloud computing will help facilitate specific industry use cases, such as in the music and sports industries.

Secondly, the simulated world will be created through spatial computing, defined as the potential digitisation of all objects, systems, machines, people, and their interactions and environment.

Simulation and digital twins can be more accessible through cloud.

The third trend involves real-time analytics and machine learning, while the fourth concerns the faster development of innovation with governance and security.

The final trend pertains to the prospect of an increase in the usage of purpose-built or custom chips, which can deliver maximised hardware performance but have lower energy consumption.

"Thailand is among the countries that will leverage custom chips to reduce costs," said Mr Vatsun.
