Amazon shoppers warned as phone charger banned from sale due to 'high risk' of electric shock

Amazon shoppers who have bought a particular brand of fast charger for their phone from the website have been warned that it poses a dangerous safety risk.

The TOPK Fast Charger PD40W was rejected at the UK border and removed from Amazon on 28 November after testing revealed that the device poses a "high risk of electric shock". The product was found to contain plug dimensions that are non-compliant with Electrical Equipment Regulations introduced in 2016, meaning that there is potential access to live parts.

An update on the Gov.uk website explained: "The disposition and size of the live pins do not meet the dimensional requirements of the relevant standard and will not fit fully into a wall socket. This means the live pins are exposed and users could potentially touch live parts when unplugging, or plugging in, the plug from a socket."

The device, which was made in China, is a wall plug containing two USB-C ports for phone charging cables. Other charging plugs from TOPK appear to be a popular purchase among Amazon shoppers, with several of the brand's devices receiving hundreds of reviews apiece.

Trading Standards confirmed: "The import has been rejected at the border. The listing has been removed by the online marketplace (Amazon)."

The affected charger is model B15-C2, with a barcode X001I0QSL9 and ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) B09WW1R8H3. Anyone who has bought a charger plug from Amazon should check these details to ensure they aren't using a device that could give them an electric shock.
