The God of War TV show is one of those projects we’ve been hearing about for some time, and it sounds like we’re getting ever-so-closer to seeing the adaptation of one of PlayStation’s premier franchises. The series, which will one day be available for anyone with an Amazon subscription, will continue Prime Video’s trend of turning great games into movies and shows, and it could be the biggest one yet.

What Is The God of War Premiere Date?
As much as we would love to see Amazon give the God of War TV show a premiere date on the 2026 TV schedule, it’s very unlikely that we see Kratos and Atreus exploring the various realms any earlier than later next year. With only one member of the case announced so far (more on that next) and production not having yet gotten underway as of January 2026, it seems like we’re way off from any concrete release window.
That said, Amazon has announced that the series was given a two-season order as a starting point, so we at least have that to look forward to…
The God Of War Television Series Will Follow The Events Of The 2018 Game
When the project was first announced, Prime Video revealed that God of War will focus on the setting seen in the two most recent – God of War and God of War: Ragnarok – opposed to the Ancient Greece location and lore from earlier titles. The studio doubled down on this stance in January 2026 when it shared a brief plot synopsis:
God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
This is pretty much the same description used for God of War when the game came out in 2018, and showed a different side of the aging demigod. However, it hasn’t been revealed if the show will focus solely on the franchise reset or if the events of Ragnarok will come into play. We shall see…
The God Of War Cast
One of the biggest questions surrounding the God of War TV show since the beginning has been about who’ll be playing Kratos when the series lands on Prime Video. Those hoping to see Christopher Judge reprise his role for the small screen are out of luck, but the actor chosen to play the Spartan demi-god is no slouch.
In January 2026, Amazon Studios revealed that Sons of Anarchy and Remember the Titans star Ryan Hurst would be playing the grieving warrior on his journey to put his wife to rest. Those who’ve played the games, specifically 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok, will remember that Hurst provided the voice and motion-capture work for Thor. Surely, there’ll be some kind of reference during the show.
A few days later, Deadline reported that Teresa Palmer would be joining Hurst as Phoebe/Sif, Kratos’ wife. Over the years, Palmer has appeared in movies like Hacksaw Ridge, The Fall Guy, and Warm Bodies.
Amazon announced another addition later that month when it was revealed that Max Parker would be taking on the role of Heimdall, one of Odin’s sons.
Amazon Studios Has Put Together A Killer Creative Team For The Show
When it comes to spearheading the project behind-the-scenes, Amazon Studios has put together one hell of a team to see the God of War TV show through. The studio has announced that Ronald D. Moore will serve as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the series, bringing with him decades of experience. Over the years, Moore has developed shows like Outlander, For All Mankind, and most notably, Battlestar Galactica (both the 2003 miniseries and 2004 continuation).
Moore isn’t the only high-profile talent getting the show off the ground, as Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye has been hired to helm the first two episodes of the upcoming series. The decorated TV director has worked on everything from Shogun to Alias and The Boys to Chuck. He also has experience in the video game world, as he directed several episodes of Fallout, including the first two chapters of the show’s second season.
Producers From PlayStation Productions And Santa Monica Studio Will Also Be Working On The Show
Fans of the God of War games can let out a sigh of relief as Amazon Studios has announced that the show will be made in conjunction with PlayStation Productions, which has been overseeing a number of video game adaptations as of late.
It should also be noted thatCory Barlog, who was involved with the franchise going back to 2005, will be one of the series’ executive producers. Over the years, Barlog has done everything from working on the animation to serving as the game director (God of War) and creative director (God of War: Ragnarok).
Production On God Of War Will Reportedly Start Spring 2026
Though Amazon Studios has yet to announce when filming will get underway, production on God of War will reportedly get underway this spring. Last September, Nexus Point News reported that cameras would start rolling in March 2026 in Vancouver, which is right around the corner.
God Of War Isn’t The Only Video Game Adaptation In The Works For Prime Video
When it comes to streamers who dabble in video game adaptations, Prime Video is in a league of its own. Sure, Netflix, Peacock, and HBO Max all have great video game shows, but Amazon Studios seems to be going all-in on the genre as of late. With Fallout Season 2 underway (and a third season in the works), the Secret Level series, and now God of War, the streamer is really stepping up its game.
However, it’s not the only high-profile project in the works. Amazon is also working on the highly anticipated Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner (that first-look image is amazing), as well as a Mass Effect adaptation. And don’t even get us started on the planned Wolfenstein series.
