The Lord of the Rings TV series due to stream on Amazon Prime later this year has been given its official title.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be available from September 2, 2022, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos tweeted today.
He told his 3.5million followers: "Can't wait for you to see it."
Filming for the series, which is set before the events in JRR Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, has already wrapped up with a second series green-lit.
The series promises to delve into the so-called Second Age of Middle-earth before the Third Age story of Frodo, Sam, Gollum and the Dark Lord Sauron that was also recounted three blockbuster films by director Peter Jackson.
And just as The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King were all prefixed by The Lord of the Rings, so to is the new series.
Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay said: “This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
"Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring — but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”
The first season is reported to have cost $465m and filming took place mainly in New Zealand. Filming for the second series is moving to the UK.
