A Google (GOOGL) project, that many anticipate will be much-discussed at a conference May 10, suddenly had an unplanned announcement on May 7.
The Google I/O conference (which stands for both "Input/Output" and "Innovation in the Open,") will showcase a number of new Google products.
DON'T MISS: Huge Amazon Change Affects Many Customers
Attracting a lot of attention in the media in advance of the conference is Pixel Fold, Google's first foldable phone.
But on an Amazon (AMZN) page overseas, a page was visible for a brief period May 7 before it was taken down.
"An Amazon Japan listing for Google's upcoming Pixel Tablet showed up on Sunday, CNET reported. "The now-removed page, which was earlier spotted by WinFuture and others, said the tablet will be powered by Google's Tensor G2 chip, have an 11-inch LCD display at 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and 500-nit brightness, 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage."
"Other features in the tablet are the 8-megapixel cameras in the front and rear, Bluetooth 5.2, USI 2.0 touch pen compatibility and quad speakers, according to the listing," CNET wrote. "The Japanese price for the Pixel Tablet was 79,800 yen, or approximately $590."
Google had hinted at the unveiling of the tablet before.
"Google previously announced that the Pixel Tablet was coming in 2023 but has yet to give more details," CNET reported. "CNET's Scott Stein says Google may position the tablet as a home hub device and also expects it to be part of the company's AI push."
Regarding Pixel Fold, it seems to have the same basic design as its non-folding counterpart.
The phone folds inward similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, which together with the Galaxy Z Flip, has dominated the foldable smartphone market.
But Google’s entry adds another major player to the foldable market, especially as the tech company has invested more into its smartphone hardware division since the release of the Pixel 6 in October 2021.
The Pixel Fold is expected to start at over $1,700 which would make it the most expensive phone in Google’s lineup, according to a report by CNBC. That would put it around the price range of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 which is at $1,799.
