A TV series inspired by the popular Mass Effect games franchise is reportedly under development by Amazon MGM Studios with the help of a former writer for Fast & Furious 9.

Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey is the individual who is set to write and executive product the TV series adaptation. He will be joined by Karim Zreik and Electronic Arts' Michael Gamble as executive producers.

Mass Effect TV Series

There was no official information regarding the exact plot details of the series despite the confirmation. The announcement comes after a report in 2021 noted that Amazon was negotiating to develop a TV series based on the popular game franchise.

However, there has been no news about the discussions since then prior to the recent confirmation.

There were also reports of previous attempts to work on a feature film that is based on the Mass Effect games but it was something that never actually happened, according to Variety.

The first entry in the Mass Effect series was released in 2007. It instantly became a smash hit among video game fans. The game spawned three sequels in the main series and the latest, Mass Effect: Andromeda, was released in 2017.

The series also saw several mobile game spinoffs as well as entries in animated films, novels, comics, and many other media.

The first three Mass Effect games had a story that focused on Commander Shepard, who is a human soldier who lives in the 22nd century and is on a mission to save humanity.

Amazon's Success in Video Game Adaptations

The decision to work on a Mass Effect TV adaptation comes after Amazon had major success with its Fallout TV series. This also comes after developer BioWare released the Mass Effect Legendary Edition in 2021, The Verge said.

This was a games package that included the first three games in the franchise and was updated to run on modern consoles. After the studio released Mass Effect: Andromeda, it shifted its focus elsewhere and gave the public the live-service action game Anthem.

Amazon said that the planned Mass Effect TV adaptation is based on the best-selling sci-fi video game franchise from Electronic Arts. This did not confirm whether it would be a straightforward adaptation or would feature a different story set in the in-game universe.

The news of the show also comes as fans of the franchise are looking forward to more details about BioWare's Mass Effect 5 game. The studio's full attention is now here after it ditched continued support for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, according to IGN.
