‘Amazing’ City Ground could have massive role to play in Nottingham Forest relegation fight

The atmosphere inside of the City Ground has been praised by pundits following the massive win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

Nottingham Forest went into the game knowing that a win would lift them out of the relegation zone and above Everton and Leicester City, following the latter’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United in their last outing. The Reds did sit in 19th place in the table, two points adrift of Leicester in 17th.

Things didn’t start too well for Steve Cooper ’s men, with Brennan Johnson seeing an early penalty saved before Brighton took the lead in the 38th minute. Forest were however able to pull level on the stroke of half time through a pascal Gross own goal.

The Reds were then able to complete the turnaround in the second half. First Danilo raced clear of the Brighton defence and slotted home to give Forest the lead, before Morgan Gibbs-White scored from the spot after Lewis Dunk was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

The goals came much to the delight of the Forest fans in attendance, with the full-time whistle being greeted by a wall for noise as supporters celebrated a first win since the start of February. It was the atmosphere that was created by fans which was one of the talking points for pundits after the game.

Former striker Adebayo Akinfenwa said: “We can barely hear ourselves, the togetherness from the players, the connection with the fans,” he told BT Sport after the game.

“You can see why they’ve won so many games here, and this is what it is. They still need to win games at home and try and pick up a win away from home.

“But you can hear it; the togetherness, the spirit, the energy, it is amazing.”

Another pundit in former Forest striker Glenn Murray also gave his thoughts. “I represented Nottingham Forest unfortunately during lockdown, I never got to see this,” he said.

“When this Forest crowd get behind you it is really, really special.”
