Abdoulaye Doucoure's thumping strike in the second half handed Sean Dyche's side the victory as the Blue side of Merseyside breathed a huge sigh of relief once the full-time whistle sounded.

Onana has impressed in his debut campaign in the Premier League as he opted to remain at Everton to help with the survival fight. The Belgian attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal in January.

The Belgian took to Instagram to say: "Whatever it took, it was worth it... Staying in the Premier League should be normal for a club this size. I want to thank you all because it's been a very difficult season for us.

"Despite that, we all stuck together and you kept pushing us. If, at the end we made it, it's because of your massive support throughout the season at home, but also away. So therefore, Toffees Army, thank you."
