Actress Florence Pugh has accused Instagram of restricting a post in which she spoke out about allegations of a gang rape involving a former Cornell University student. The actor questioned why parts of her statement had been restricted after she used the platform to call for greater accountability and urged men to speak openly about sexual violence.
Pugh's comments came after a former student filed a lawsuit alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple men at a fraternity house in 2024. The allegations have not been established as facts in court, and the case remains a legal dispute.
Florence Pugh Speaks Out About the Alleged Assault
Pugh shared a lengthy statement on Instagram describing herself as feeling 'uneasy and sick and anxious' after reading about the allegations.
She questioned why men who may have known about the alleged incident did not intervene and called on male peers to take a more active role in confronting sexual violence. 'How can you expect us to trust that it's 'not all men' when in moments like this, many of you stay quiet?' Pugh wrote.
The actor also addressed what she described as a broader failure to protect women, arguing that conversations about sexual violence cannot be separated from questions about accountability and social responsibility.
'Am I Being Silenced?'
The controversy intensified when Pugh said Instagram had restricted her post.
She later shared that portions of the statement had been taken down or were no longer being shown to some users. In another update, she questioned whether speaking publicly about sexual violence was effectively resulting in her being silenced.

Pugh's claim about the restriction was reported after users said they encountered warnings or could not access the full statement. It was not immediately clear why Instagram restricted the content or whether the platform had removed it because of its subject matter, moderation systems or reports from users.
That uncertainty became part of the discussion, with supporters arguing that posts addressing sexual violence should not be suppressed simply because they contain difficult subject matter.
Pugh Calls on Men To Speak Up
Much of Pugh's statement focused on the role of men in preventing sexual violence. Rather than addressing women alone, she called on male followers to become more vocal when they encounter behaviour that could enable or normalise sexual assault.
'There is no equality until you respect our bodies,' Pugh wrote, adding that women should be able to say they feel safe.
Her comments quickly drew support from other public figures, including actor Josh Gad, who separately condemned the allegations and questioned the disciplinary consequences described in reporting about the case.
The Cornell Case Remains a Legal Dispute
The allegations Pugh was responding to concern a lawsuit brought by a former student who says she was drugged and raped by multiple men at a Cornell fraternity house in October 2024.
The lawsuit names seven men as defendants and also makes allegations concerning the university's handling of the incident. Cornell has said the allegations were investigated and adjudicated under university policies and that it will respond through the legal process.
Because the case is ongoing, allegations made in the lawsuit should not be treated as established findings of criminal guilt.
The case has nevertheless prompted a wider conversation about how universities respond to allegations of sexual violence and what responsibility students and institutions have when misconduct is reported.
Florence Pugh Has Previously Challenged Instagram
This is not the first time Pugh has publicly criticised Instagram over restrictions on her content.
In 2021, she said she had been blocked from posting further material about her appearance as Yelena Belova in Hawkeye after some of her posts were reportedly reported over spoilers. At the time, she described the restriction as 'beyond ridiculous.'
Her latest dispute with the platform is considerably more serious in subject matter.
For Pugh, the central issue is now whether discussing sexual violence can be done without having the conversation restricted by social-media moderation systems. As the legal case continues, her Instagram posts have added another layer to an already contentious debate about accountability, online speech and how platforms handle discussions of traumatic events.
