Alton Towers named UK's best value theme park for families - see the full list

Alton Towers has topped a list of the best value theme parks in the UK, beating out other popular spots such as Legoland, Thorpe Park and Paultons Park.

The popular resort in Staffordshire came out top in the new rankings, which were determined based on numbers of rides, cost of entry, parking fees, TripAdvisor ratings and its Insta-worthy credentials. Average costs were based on two adults and two children visiting the park in peak summer periods, and included parking costs.

Although Alton Towers wasn't the cheapest theme park, new research by holiday rentals site Big Domain judged it to be good value based on the number of rides, and overall costs.

Legoland and Flamingo Land came in second and third place respectively, with the judges praising the colourful attractions for their family friendly offerings.

Check out the full top 10 list below...

1. Alton Towers, Staffordshire

Coming in first is Alton Towers in Staffordshire, and with a 4/5 satisfaction score, it’s no surprise that the park has over two million visitors in a typical year.

With 40+ rides to choose from, including 10 roller coasters, there is something to please everyone, whether you’re a thrill seeker waiting to drop on Oblivion or keen to spend the day pottering around Cbeebies Land.

Although it costs £150 for a family of four to visit, the sheer number of rides means the price per ride is just 90p.

Be sure to book in advance though, as doing so can save you around £29 per ticket, totting up to approximately £116 for a family.

2. Legoland, Windsor

In second place is Legoland a fantastically inclusive park for all ages and all heights, with more than 22 rides without height restrictions, perfect for the little kids.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to appeal to the adults (and big kids) too - with 45+ rides, including 6 water rides and 4 rollercoasters, meaning the cost is just 58p per ride.

That’s not to mention the intricate artwork on show at Miniworld, where famous landmarks from across the globe have been recreated in miniature, and LEGO Mythica, the UK’s first flying theatre ride!.

Be sure to book this adventure in advance as it could save you around £30 per ticket - working out at £120 for a family of four.

3. Flamingo Land, North Yorkshire

Flamingo Land is home to the record breaking Mumbo Jumbo (Peter Harbour - North Yorkshire Live)

Next up is Flamingo Land, which has 52+ rides, and if you rode them all on the same day, it would average out at around 55p per ride.

It’s home to Mumbo Jumbo, a record-breaking ride for having the most extreme drop in rollercoaster history - one not to miss if you’re an adrenaline junkie.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the park also has around 13 rides with no height restrictions, meaning it’s also a good option for younger kids who may not meet the criteria for some of the larger rides.

Its low cost, 3.5/5 satisfaction score and 73k Instagram hashtags have helped Flamingo Land to claim third place.

4. Drayton Manor, Staffordshire

Drayton Manor had a high average satisfaction rating (Drayton Manor)

Drayton Manor has an average satisfaction score of 4/5, so it is not only excellent value but also highly rated by its visitors.

With 47+ rides, there is something for every member of the family. Thrill-seekers will be drawn to the likes of Shockwave, Europe’s first Intamin stand-up coaster and still only one of two, and Thor an eagerly awaited Disk-O Coaster due to open this spring.

There are plenty of attractions too, with the average 'cost per ride' working out at about 58p.

Oh, and one big hit has to be Thomas Land, themed around Thomas the Tank Engine.

5. Crealy, Devon

Crealy in Devon is budget but fun (Publicity Picture)

At just £96 for a family day out, Crealy comes in as the park with the cheapest average cost per ride (just 40p).

Crealy is undoubtedly one of the most budget-friendly options that made our best value list. It has 60+ rides making it one of the best for variety and is situated in Devon, a real family favourite holiday destination.

There are also more than 200 animals that you can meet on-site - which is why we’re not surprised that it’s been voted Devon’s best day out for a staggering eight years running.

6. Paultons Park, Hampshire

The home of Peppa Pig World is nestled in the New Forest National Park, and offers over 70 rides and attractions.

In fact, it's one of our top picks of the best theme parks for toddlers in the UK, with gentle rides for little ones who want to try their very first rollercoaster!

Peppa Pig World is included in the theme park entry fee, and the rest of the park is also tailored to younger kids so there's plenty to see and do, from the roaring dinosaurs in The Lost Kingdom to kid-friendly rollercoasters.

The average cost for a family of four was about £155, although it's worth noting that children under one metre in height can visit for free.

7. Wicksteed Park, Northamptonshire

The park's famous water slide (PA)

Arguably not the biggest or best known on the list, what Wicksteed lacks in name recognition it makes up for with rustic charm - and with an average family cost of £82, it can make for a more budget-friendly day out.

It is situated in a Grade II listed park and has been slowly growing over the past 100 years, having started off as a small meadow with a train track running around the lake.

Wicksteed Park railway is one of the features of the park and more than 15 million people have taken to its rails since it first opened in 1931.

8. Blackpool Pleasure Beach

The Big One at Blackpool pleasure beach (SWNS)

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has something for everyone whether you're a thrill-seeker looking to take on the Big Dipper, or a family with kids who want to check out the Nickelodeon land.

Plus, its handy location right on Blackpool's promenade means you can easily add it into an itinerary on a seaside break with the kids.

The attraction also offers some fun seasonal events - those who love a good scare won't want to miss out on its Halloween celebrations.

9. Wheelgate

Good times are to be had at Wheelgate (Wheelgate Adventure Park)

Robin Hood's Wheelgate Park is a 30 acre family theme park and water park in Farnsfield and includes two large indoor play centres, and a farm.

For the sunnier days, there's also a waterpark - one of our picks of the UK's best water parks - boasting five exciting slides that little thrill-seekers will love.

It is widely considered a lovely day out and cheap too, at an average cost for a family of 4 of £62.80 and average cost per ride of £0.52.

10. Thorpe Park, Surrey

The real serious thrill seekers in the country will be well acquainted with Thorpe Park.

The Surrey-based theme park has some of the biggest rides in the country, including the gut-wrenchingly fast Stealth, the particularly loopy Colossus and alarmingly themed Saw ride.

Come Halloween it's known for its scare attractions and live mazes filled with terrifying zombies and other creatures - although you'll need to pay extra if you want to enjoy the special maze attractions.

With an average family cost of £155 it's similar prices to Alton Towers, but cost per ride worked out at about £1.23 which is why it was knocked off the top spots.
