Woody Harrelson has shared fresh “proof” that Matthew McConaughey could be his brother.
The actors are convinced they are related after McConaughey previously suggested his mother had a romance with Harrelson’s father when she was separated from her husband.
Harrelson has now revealed that when McConaughey was born, the star’s father refused to go to the hospital because he felt he was not his child.
When the Cheers star was asked by actor Justin Theroux on Esquire’s podcast Explain This if he genuinely believed McConaughey was his brother, he replied: "Well, I don’t know because we haven’t done the testing, but I can say that there’s a lot of almost insane ‘coincidences’.
“His mum had a relationship with my dad right around the time he was conceived,” he explained.
“That seems like a big coincidence and [when his mum] was going to the hospital to give birth, he goes, ‘That ain’t my son,’ and he didn’t go to the hospital with her.”
The True Detective actors already have a close relationship with McConaughey’s children, referring to the Cheers actor as “Uncle”.
“My kids call him Uncle Woody,” said McConaughey. “His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me.
“His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”
Appearing on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, he continued: "In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families.
“And my mum is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew’. It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
He said the conversation with his mother prompted him to look into his family history.
“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that his dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce,” said the star, who was estranged from his mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, for several years.
The man he grew up calling his father, James McConaughey, died in 1992. Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, died in prison in 2007.
