Almost half of Americans do not know what July 4 celebrates, poll finds

  • A recent poll indicates that nearly half of Americans, and 61 percent of Gen Zers, do not know what they are celebrating on the Fourth of July .
  • Many Americans lack fundamental historical knowledge, with only 61 percent correctly identifying Great Britain as the nation from which the 13 colonies declared independence.
  • Over half of the population is unaware of the reasons for the colonies' declaration of independence or the primary purpose of the U.S. Constitution .
  • A significant majority, 56 percent, are concerned that the U.S. may no longer be a free country, identifying corruption and politicians disregarding the Constitution as key threats.
  • The survey also revealed that 38 percent of Americans find it acceptable for a president they support to stretch the Constitution to achieve their objectives.
