Ally McCoist reacts as Diego Maradona's Hand of God jersey goes up for auction at £4 million

Ex-Rangers star Trevor Steven joked a rich Scot has coughed up £4m for Diego Maradona’s ' Hand of God ' shirt as it goes on sale at auction.

Maradona swapped shirts with former midfielder Steve Hodge at the end of Argentina’s 1986 World Cup fixture against England and it has stayed in his possession for 35 years.

Hodge has now put the shirt up for sale at Sotheby's and a £4m reserve on the garment has already been met by one anonymous bidder.

Ibrox legend Steven appeared on TalkSport breakfast show and told Ally McCoist swapping shirts wasn’t something the players had discussed beforehand.

He said: “There were maybe one or two remarks during the game about swapping shirts.

“We were just so taken up by the idea that we were hard done by, and going home in the morning with the furore around Bobby Robson, that the idea of shirts wasn’t really a hot topic.

“It has been said that Steve was following him around for the last ten minutes but I don’t think he had that in his mind at all.

“But when the whistle went he ended up with perhaps the most famous shirt in football history, alongside the number 10 of Pele from the 1970 World Cup.”

The panel speculated how much Rangers punters would be willing to pay for one of Ally McCoist’s jerseys but the former Gers striker admitted he didn't even watch the famous fixture.

He said: “I missed the game because I was on holiday, along with most of the other Scottish football players at that particular time, but I didn’t get any satisfaction from it at all, really.

“But I did with the second goal. The second goal was absolute genius from him, it really was.

“If you had asked me honestly how much I thought that top would go for I might have said about £250,000 or £500,000.”

“I know it might seem an obvious thing to say but the value of the shirt has obviously gone up since Maradona passed away. But I have told you before, what a football player.”
