Ally McCoist explains why he is now tipping Leeds United for relegation heartbreak

Former Scotland international Ally McCoist has been swayed by Nottingham Forest’s recent home performance into thinking they will survive the drop into the Championship this season – at Leeds United’s expense.

Forest have claimed high-scoring victories over Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton in their two most recent games at the CIty Ground, which has pushed them three points clear of Sam Allardyce’s side and the drop zone despite Steve Cooper’s side having lost all of their past seven away trips.

That leaves Leeds United with just three games to both overtake 18th-placed Leicester City, who are ahead of them in the table on goal difference, and either make up two points on Everton or three points on Forest to ensure they remain in the top flight for next season.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist admitted he had changed his mind over the survival fight with alarming regularity, saying: “I’ve not even changed it every week, I’ve actually changed it every section of games, that’s how often I’ve changed it. It’s just unbelievable. You’ve got to feel that both Leeds United and Southampton are away (relegated).”

He added: “What about Forest? I had them dead and buried, but particularly at home…it’s stating the obvious that you’ve got to score goals to stay up, but at home they’ve been terrific the last few games, absolutely terrific.”

McCoist’s fellow host Laura Woods offered a tiny silver lining to Leeds fans, though, agreeing with the Scot that Southampton’s race looks to have been run before adding: “I gave [Southampton] a little shot yesterday because if they could have just strung two wins together, for example, maybe they could have pulled out of it, but...”
