Ally McCoist and Chris Sutton went at it over whether or not Kyogo could play in the English Premier League.
The Celtic star took his tally for the season to 25 with the second goal in the champions’ 3-1 win over Hearts in midweek. The teams do battle again this weekend with Ange Postecoglou taking his side to Tynecastle for a Scottish Cup quarter-final clash. Kyogo has scored five in five against the Jambos, who’s own hitman, Lawrence Shankland, is on 21 for the campaign but is a major injury doubt.
McCoist, who queried whether Kyogo could cut it at a higher level, stood by his assertion despite Sutton ’s incredulity, citing the Japanese star’s Viaplay Cup final double against the Gers and goal tally so far. But McCoist pointed to a previous Celtic export to the self proclaimed “best league in the world” as to why he remains to be convinced about Kyogo doing the business in England.
Sutton said on Scottish Football Extra: “25 goals and to think a couple of weeks ago on this show, Ally was questioning whether he could play in the Premier League. He’s put Rangers to the sword in the cup final and he's up to 25 goals. Do you rate him now Ally? Is he growing on you?
McCoist: “I’ve always rated him. If you look back at any of my comments, I’ve rated him very highly.”
Sutton: “You questioned whether he could play down south, didn’t you?”
McCoist: “Yeah, I did and I probably still do.”
Sutton: “Oh come on! What does he have to do? Score 40? Put Rangers to the sword in another final?”
McCoist: “I’ll tell you why. When you think of someone like Edouard, who again, was excellent with Celtic, and has gone down south and done okay. He’s done okay, so I'd still have a question mark over Kyogo.
“I’m not saying for a minute that I don’t like him. Absolutely, you cannot argue with his goals, he plays on the shoulder, excellent. I've always been a fan of Kyogo and I really like his style, as I am with Maeda and Hatate.”
