Alleged National Guard shooter hospitalized after refusing to eat and drink in jail

  • Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of shooting two National Guard troops near a Washington, D.C., Metro station last year, has been hospitalized after refusing to eat in jail .
  • During an emergency hearing Thursday, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta said Lakanwal is being treated at George Washington University Hospital after “refusing food and, in some cases, water ,” according to The Washington Post . His health “has deteriorated quite substantially and he is in dire circumstances,” Mehta added.
  • Prosecutors were granted access to Lakanwal’s medical records from the past 24 hours during an emergency hearing.
  • Lakanwal faces a 17-count superseding indictment, including charges related to the murder of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, which are eligible for the death penalty.
  • Lakanwal, an Afghan national who came to the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
