Homelessness charity St Mungo’s has responded after concerning allegations were aired on bedsheets outside its hostel in Speedwell. Complaints relating to the Longhills building included claims that "managers don't care" and there is "no support to move on".
Allegations were written on sheets and pieces of cardboard and hung last week on the hedgerows outside the hostel, on full display for people passing by along the busy Whitefield Road. There were also allegations about crime including drug use.
The charity said it could not comment on individual client cases due to confidentiality but it had become aware of the signs. A spokesperson said the allegations were investigated and “there had been no complaints made in relation to them”.

The St Mungo's spokesperson added: "The safety of our clients is always our priority...We have robust safeguarding policies in place and we will always fully investigate any allegations that are made regarding incidents in our service."
In response to the allegation there was 'no support’ for people living at the hostel, the statement continued: “In our services, we support lots of people who have faced different types of trauma in their lives. Homelessness is complex and we work closely with our residents to help them access mental health support and drug and alcohol services if they need to."
According to Homeless Link, the hostel is part of the Bristol complex needs service providing accommodation and housing-related support for vulnerable adults with complex needs and/or mental health issues. A Bristol City Council document dated 2021 stated that it has 26 spaces available for people over the age of 22, with 13 self-contained units and others sharing facilities.
