Allan Saint-Maximin pinpoints key factor in Newcastle United's survival battle

Allan Saint-Maximin has urged his team-mates not to become obsessed with the progress of Newcastle United's rivals in the Premier League's relegation tussle.

The French winger insists he is not watching other results with Watford, Everton, Norwich and Burnley all vying for safety in the top-flight.

The Toffees and Watford are hoping to benefit from a new manager bounce with Roy Hodgson opening his account with a point at Burnley on Saturday night while Frank Lampard enjoyed a great start with a convincing FA Cup win over Brentford.

But Saint-Maximin told Chronicle Live: "I don't look at other teams.

"I just want to be focused on the way I play at this time and how I can help my team.

"So many things can happen.

"I try to get through games without injury and to take care of my body because when you are injured you can't help the team.

"There are so many things that are more important than watching other teams play, it's not helpful watching Norwich, Brentford or anybody else.

"I am just focused on what I can do for my team."

The Magpies were inspired by Saint-Maximin in the latter stages of last season when a solid end of term run helped guide Steve Bruce's side to 12th place.

United, however, are seven points worse off than this time last season and have it all to do - starting with tonight's clash at home to Everton.

But a confident Saint-Maximin said: "To be honest I never feel pressure.

"In this position, I supposed there is 'pressure' created because of the position we are in the Premier League.

"We're at the bottom and for sure there is the pressure that comes with that.

"We know we have to win, draws won't help make us safe.

"We just have to keep focused on winning that's the only thing that's important."

And with 17 important matches to go, Saint-Maximin still expects Newcastle to finish the job of survival in the first year of the new owners.

The French winger said: "You always have to believe.

"I always believe. I am really focused about the way I play and what I can give to the team.

"So at this time especially when you are in this position and you're at the bottom you just have to try to do everything to win the most games we can.

"We are now really focused to get the next win against Everton.

"At this time that's the most important."
