Allan McGregor was “lucky” not to concede a penalty during Rangers ’ 3-1 win over Kilmarnock.
That was the view of the Sportscene panel as they analysed the action from Ibrox. The hosts responded to last weekend’s Viaplay Cup final disappointment by going three goals up in Killie before the break thanks to Connor Goldson, James Tavernier and Fashion Sakala.
Derek McInnes’ men improved in the second half however, with former Light Blue Jordan Jones putting an extra spring in the visitors’ step. And it was his work that led to what James McFadden believes should have seen McGregor penalised by Willie Collum. He parried Jones’ shot but couldn’t hold on. McKenzie beat him to the ball and in an attempt to get after it McGregor clumsily bundled over the Killie wide man, something which left McInnes angry at full-time. Collum ignored the protests, but perhaps VAR should have stepped in and asked him to take another look.
“I think Allan McGregor’s lucky,” said McFadden. “I really do, because the ball is running away from him.
"The three of us know Allan McGregor. We know he’s going to do whatever he can and he gives Rory McKenzie a little nudge. But he got away with it on that occasion.”
Meanwhile, former Rangers favourite Neil McCann liked what he saw from Nicolas Raskin. The Belgian wa sin from the start after coming off the bench at Hampden, and McCann has predicted big things for the January signing.
“He’s a player I’ve looked into and asked some questions about his time in Belgium with Standard Liege,” McCann admitted. “They’ve got quite a fervent support and I think he can handle the environment.
“He might be small, but he’s what I'd consider a wiry type player. He’ll put the foot in, but he’ll play the pass and can control the game.
“He likes to get up on the game as well. He’s not just an anchorman. He’s a player that can add a lot to Rangers.
“He’s highly regarded and has something like 50 youth caps through the various ages with Belgium, which is very impressive. The longer he plays in our game, he’ll understand it. He’s shown real flashes that the fans will like him and will become a key member of the team.”
