Allan McGregor could be Rangers number one 'FOREVER' as understudy Jon McLaughlin makes his own case

Jon McLaughlin reckons he could be waiting a long time to fill Allan McGregor’s gloves after locking the veteran Rangers keeper could go on FOREVER.

The Light Blues stand-in shot-stopper is in line for another rare outing as attention switches to the Scottish Cup and a trip to Annan Athletic.

McLaughlin recently penned an Ibrox extension until 2024 and hopes McGregor also decides to extend.

The 34-year-old is six years McGregor’s junior but doesn’t see the No. 1 stepping down any time soon.

He smiled: “Allan could go on forever if he wanted to! I would be delighted if he continues after this season.

“Allan McGregor is a fantastic goalkeeper and great to work with. My aim of course is to become a first team regular at this club, as it is for everyone here.

“I fully respect the manager’s decision to pick the squad he wants. I have to be ready to take my chances.

“It is important I perform to a similarly high level to Allan for any opportunity I am given.

“I was very happy to sign my new contract. It was something I was very happy to be signing and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”

Rangers haven’t won the Scottish Cup since 2009 and McLaughlin hopes to take another step at putting that right.

He said: “Every game we go into we want to win, we approach everything in the same way. We will give Annan our full respect and be full prepared.

“Our full focus is on the result tomorrow. For me, it is all about working at this football club and contributing my ability to the wider cause.

“We give Annan respect and do as much research as possible but we trust the ability in our team.

“It will come down to us performing to the best of our ability with full focus on the match.

“We have experience on the artificial surface, we know it will be a big occasion and you have to take it very seriously.

“At a club like Rangers we play a lot of games. Our full focus is getting into the next round before we look ahead to the Dortmund fixture. For now all our focus is on Annan.”
